ABOUT THE ALBUM:

"ShazaMasaLaKazoo" is the title of an album prepared jointly by ethno-electronic bands Masala Soundsystem (Poland) and ShazaLaKazoo (Serbia). It will be released on 22.11.22 - and it came to life as a part of an international art project arranged by Planet Foundation (Fundacja Planet) and the Bialystok Cultural Centre (Białostocki Ośrodek Kultury). The album will be published digitally in the form of a "public good" - available for free listening and/or free downloading through the websites of its creators and through popular streaming services. At the same time, it will be released in a limited series in physical form (CD) by the Bialystok Cultural Centre. Also in this form, however, it will not be available for sale - but it will be available free of charge through various forms of "giveaway" ;)

"ShazaMasaLaKazoo" is a crazy post-apocalyptic bus ride, where somewhen in the future modern/traditional folk artists go from Belgrade (via Sutomore) to Bialystok - and back. It's a futuristic soundtrack to a Polish-Serbian countryside wedding (in Atomice), taking place in 3033 and set above the atomic bomb crater - but the former battlefields are already overgrown with crops, and in the skies the sun is shining once again. Traditional instruments and melodies intertwine with futuristic electronics, and the range of inspiration extends from folk music of various world regions to the pop-culture of the 20th century. The soundscape of the album seems to land somewhere between "Slavic Mad Max" and "Cyberpunk Badlands: Podlasie". Meanwhile, the lyrical layer is a universal and critical commentary on timeless situations, attitudes and problems - which periodically push us to the brink of various kinds of annihilation.

The cover art for the physical version of the album was created by an accomplished Polish graphic artist Magdalena Płońska. Meanwhile, the cover art for the digital version of the album, as well as the visuals accompanying its publication on YouTube, are the "AI dreamt images", based upon "a cloud of associations and inspirations" resulting from the album's lyrical and musical layer.

ABOUT THE COOPERATION:

It can be said that this Polish-Serbian artistic cooperation was written in the stars. Despite the fact that for a long time the bands did not meet directly - ShazaLaKazoo tunes were blasted from the speakers at early Masala Soundsystem parties - and similarly, the track "Cyber ​​Punjabi" from Masala's debut release was regularly appearing in ShazaLaKazoo's sets for several years. Over time, the gravity pulled these bands even closer. In 2010 Neki (one of the founders of ShazaLaKazoo) remixed the song of Village Kollektiv (which was Masala's sister project, with most of Masala members involved). A little later, in 2014, Neki and Duże Pe from Masala (and Sylwia Kowalska from the Planet Foundation) met in Budapest, while taking part in the Visegrad project "Ethno Music - Old Traditions In New Ways". On the basis of the good vibes resulting from this meeting, a decision was made to "someday do something together". Since then, the Planet Foundation has tried several times to raise funds from various sources for the implementation of the joint Masala Soundsystem + ShazaLaKazoo project. Unfortunately, negative answers were given several times - and then the COVID pandemic arrived, which "frozen" culture for a good two years. This seemed to bury all hopes that this cooperation would ever actually take place.

But then - like in a Bollywood movie - when it seemed that all was lost, the sun suddenly rose and everything ended well, thanks to the cooperation of the Planet Foundation with the Bialystok Cultural Centre, who agreed to support this project. The first proof of this happy ending was the Masala Soundsystem + ShazaLaKazoo joint concert, staged as a part of "Wschód Kultury" festival in Białystok in August 2022. The second proof is the album that you are (virtually or actually) holding in your hands.

ABOUT THE BANDS:

SHAZALAKAZOO
Founded in 1996 in Belgrade (Serbia), ShazaLaKazoo is appreciated all over the globe and belongs to the top tier of the world's global bass scene. They are one of the pioneers of creatively combining folk inspirations (initially mainly Balkan, later from around the world) with modern "alternative electronics" from a wide spectrum of genres. The founders of the band - Milan Djuric (aka Neki) and Uros Petkovic - are currently supported by trumpeter Milos Nikolic and violinist / vocalist Aimilia Varanaki. ShazaLaKazoo has released four full-length albums so far - "Speaking Balkanian" (2010), "Karton City Boom" (2011), "Monobrow" (2014) and "Metanational" (2016) - plus a string of EPs, singles and remixes. Live-acts of ShazaLaKazoo are an extreme energy punch of ethno-electronic madness, guaranteeing a unique musical and aesthetic experience. The band has toured extensively (and still tours) all over the world, performing at hundreds of parties, events and festivals of a significant scale.

Masala Soundsystem is a Warsaw-based collective founded in 2002. It spectacularly collides the world of traditional instruments and melodies from around the world with modern drum loops, deep bass and socially conscious street poetry (in Polish and English). Masala's music crosses the genre boundaries, reaching for punk fury, dancey electronics, hip-hop expression, dub depth or ethnic mysticism - depending on the needs of the given tune. The band consists of virtuosos in their fields, coming from seemingly distant musical worlds - such as folk and ethnic music, hip-hop and modern electronica. However, their joint artistic activity turns out to play in perfect harmony, and combines into a fascinating whole. The result of Masala's activity is 10 LPs and EPs, a number of singles and over 1000 concerts, events and radio broadcasts - including performances at the largest and most prestigious festivals in Poland, as well as several dozen of performances abroad: from the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary, through Germany, France and Sweden, to South Korea, India and Afghanistan.

O PŁYCIE:

22 listopada 2022 roku to data premiery albumu "ShazaMasaLaKazoo" - przygotowanego wspólnymi siłami przez etniczno-elektroniczne zespoły Masala Soundsystem (Polska) oraz ShazaLaKazoo (Serbia) - w toku realizacji projektu Fundacji Planet i Białostockiego Ośrodka Kultury. Płyta zostanie opublikowana w internecie w formie "dobra publicznego" - z możliwością nieodpłatnego odsłuchu i pobrania przez popularne serwisy streamingowe oraz przez strony internetowe jej twórców. Jednocześnie, zostanie ona wydana w limitowanej serii w formie fizycznej (CD) przez Białostocki Ośrodek Kultury. Również w tej postaci nie zostanie jednak wprowadzona do sprzedaży, a dostępna będzie nieodpłatnie poprzez konkursy i inne formy "rozdawnictwa" ;)

"ShazaMasaLaKazoo" to szalona przejażdżka post-apokaliptycznym autobusem, którym nowoczesno-tradycyjni ludowi twórcy wybierają się w trasę z Belgradu (przez Sutomore) do Białegostoku - i z powrotem. To futurystyczny soundtrack do polsko-serbskiego wiejskiego wesela (w Atomicach), odbywającego się w 3033 roku nad lejem po atomowej bombie - jednak dawne pola bitwy porastają już zboża, a na niebie znów świeci słońce. Tradycyjne instrumenty i melodie przeplatają się tu z futurystyczną elektroniką, a zakres inspiracji rozciąga się od "ludowszczyzny" z różnych stron świata po popkulturę XX wieku. Dźwiękowy krajobraz płyty to "Słowiański Mad Max" i "Cyberpunk Badlands: Podlasie". Warstwa tekstowa stanowi zaś uniwersalny i krytyczny komentarz do ponadczasowych sytuacji, postaw oraz problemów - które cyklicznie spychają nas na krawędź takiej bądź innej zagłady.

Okładkę dla wersji fizycznej albumu stworzyła ceniona graficzka - Magdalena Płońska. Okładka dla wersji cyfrowej płyty (oraz wizualizacje towarzyszące jej publikacji na youtube) to natomiast efekt "wyśnienia obrazów" przez sztuczną inteligencję, w oparciu o "chmurę skojarzeń oraz inspiracji" wynikającą z warstwy słowno-muzycznej albumu.

O WSPÓŁPRACY:

Można powiedzieć, że dojście do skutku tej polsko-serbskiej artystycznej współpracy zapisane było w gwiazdach. Chociaż przez długi czas oba zespoły bezpośrednio się nie poznały - to już na pierwszych imprezach Masala Soundsystem pojawiały się kawałki autorstwa ShazaLaKazoo. Podobnie, kawałek "Cyber Punjabi" z pierwszych wydawnictw Masali, przez kilka lat był "pozycją obowiązkową" w setach ShazaLaKazoo. Z biegiem czasu grawitacja przyciągała ich ku sobie coraz mocniej - w 2010 roku Neki (czyli jeden z założycieli ShazaLaKazoo) zremixował kawałek Village Kollektiv (czyli siostrzanego projektu Masali). Nieco później, w 2014 roku wspomniany Neki oraz Duże Pe z Masali (i Sylwia Kowalska z Fundacji Planet) spotkali się w Budapeszcie, biorąc udział w Wyszehradzkim projekcie "Ethno Music - Old Traditions In New Ways". Na kanwie tego spotkania zapadła decyzja, żeby "kiedyś coś zrobić razem". Od tego czasu Fundacja Planet kilkukrotnie i z różnych źródeł próbowała pozyskać środki na realizację wspólnego projektu Masala Soundsystem + ShazaLaKazoo. Niestety, najpierw kilkukrotnie i z różnych źródeł padały odpowiedzi odmowne - a później nadszedł COVID, który na dobre dwa lata "zamroził" kulturę i do reszty pogrzebał nadzieje na to, że kiedykolwiek dojdzie do tej współpracy.

Tymczasem - jak w Bollywoodzkim filmie: kiedy wydawało się, że wszystko stracone, to za sprawą współpracy Fundacji Planet z Białostockim Ośrodkiem Kultury nagle wstało słońce i wszystko dobrze się skończyło. Pierwszym dowodem tego happy endu był wspólny koncert Masala Soundsystem + ShazaLaKazoo w ramach festiwalu Wschód Kultury w sierpniu 2022 roku. Drugim jest zaś album, który (wirtualnie lub faktycznie) trzymacie właśnie w swoich dłoniach.

Założony w 1996 roku w Belgradzie (Serbia) zespół ShazaLaKazoo jest ceniony na całym świecie i należy do czołówki światowej globalno-basowej sceny. Jest on jednym z pionierów twórczego łączenia ludowych inspiracji (początkowo bałkańskich, w późniejszym okresie już nie tylko) z nowoczesną "alternatywną elektroniką" z szerokiego spektrum gatunków. Założyciele zespołu - Milan Djuric (aka Neki) i Uros Petkovic - wspierani są obecnie przez trębacza Milosa Nikolica oraz skrzypaczkę i wokalistkę Aimilię Varanaki. ShazaLaKazoo wydało jak dotąd cztery długogrające albumy - “Speaking Balkanian” (2010), “Karton City Boom” (2011), “Monobrow” (2014) i “Metanational” (2016) - a do tego szereg EPek, singli i remiksów. Live-acty ShazaLaKazoo to skrajnie taneczne szaleństwo, gwarantujące unikatowe doznania muzyczne i estetyczne. Zespół intensywnie koncertował (i koncertuje) na całym świecie, "zaliczając" na przestrzeni lat występy na setkach imprez, wydarzeń i festiwali o istotnej skali.

Masala Soundsystem to warszawski kolektyw istniejący od 2002 roku.
